     In the words of a hymn millions have sung over the years. In those days there was no Kenyon, Hagin or Copeland with their many preacher followers and the unknowing new converts. Even older Christians have been taken in by the new. Here it is:

Blessed be the Fountain of blood To a world of sinners revealed

Blessed be the dear Son of God, Only by His stripes are we healed;

Tho I’ve wandered far from His fold, Bringing to my heart pain and woe,

Wash me in the blood of the Lamb, And I shall be whiter than snow.

     Refrain :    Whiter than the snow, whiter than the snow, Wash me in the blood of the Lamb, of the Lamb, And I shall be whiter than snow.

Thorny was the crown that He wore, And the cross His body o’ercame;

Grievous were the sorrows, He bore, But He suffered thous not in vain;

May I to that Fountain be led, Made to cleanse my sins here below;

Wash me in the blood that He shed, And I shall be whiter than snow.

 

Father, I have wandered from Thee, Often has my heart gone astray;

Crimson do my sins seem to me; Water cannot wash them away;

Jesus, to that Fountain of Thine, Leaning on Thy promise I go,

Cleanse me by They washing divine, And I shall be whiter than snow.

 

   As we think of the above words, we note that they concern first of all

the person without Christ who is in sin and iniquity, far from God.

His sin, note singular needs to be dealt with. It is not a question of

sins with the unbelievers It is his sinfulness, in other words that his

spirit nature is one of sin. His soul and body are also affected by that

nature. His soul in this world directs him in sinning. His body also

gives its members to sin and never to God. The wrath of God is on

him. He needs the blood of Jesus in all of its efficacy and power. The

blood of Jesus atones for sin. In the Old Testament, blood was

sprinkled on the Mercy Seat in Moses’ Tabernacle. This typified Jesus

Christ, our Mercy Seat. There is propitiation to God because of the

sprinkled blood in the Old Testament. This is what the atonement is

all about. The sinner needs the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus,

according to 1 Peter 1:2; “According to the foreknowledge of God the

Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling

of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied”.

RV  “Sanctified” is consecrated or made holy.  The only other verse

using sanctification like this is in Hebrews 12:14; “Follow after peace

with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see

the Lord”.

 

The hymn indicates the need for the cleansing blood of Jesus often, by

the believer in Christ. This is contrary to what I heard Joseph Prince

say in a Television sermon. He said we are in the light and walking in

the light. Therefore if we do wrong the blood automatically cleanses

us and it is not necessary to be confessing our individual sins. In fact,

according to him, we can say, “I have no sin”; “I am perfect”; “I have

no fault”; “I am not guilty”. That is contradiction of the Word of

Christ. The above hymn says the truth. Believers have been doing it

for decades and even centuries. It is what is declared by the Spirit in

the following verses, 1 John 1:6-10: “If we say that we have fellowship

with Him, and we walk in darkness, we lie and are not practicing the

truth.  But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have

fellowship with one another, and the blood of His Son Jesus Christ

cleanses us from all sin”.

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is

not in us.  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous that He

may forgive us the sins, and may cleanse us from all

unrighteousness”. “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him

a liar, and His Word is not in us”. LITV

In verse 8, the singular is used – “sin”. Because uses present tense that

“we have”, this is not in relation to an unbeliever. John recognizes

that he as well as all of us, still have the carnal nature within. It is

capable of sin and does cause us to sin. The fact that “we”, all of us

including John, still have that old man is stated here: Eph 4:22 “That

you take off, according to your former way of life, the old man, who is

being destroyed according to deceitful desires” LEB and in these

verses:  “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that

you obey its desires, and do not present your members to sin as

instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as

those who are alive from the dead, and your members to God as

instruments of righteousness” LEB (Rom.6:12,13).We cannot say we

are not sinners, even now. Many like to say, “I am no longer a sinner.

I am a saint”. What is not realized is that we have a position before

God – we are saints – and that we live in this world of sin still with a

nature of sin. God has dealt with our sin to give us justification as

shown in: “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God, being

justified by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”,

Romans 3:24. Our condition of sin was dealt with. 1 John 1:10 is

speaking to the believer again and John includes himself. He says

“we”.  He speaks of the plural “sins” which will occur in our lifetime.

This does not gives us leave to continue sinning. That is another

subject for now.

The apostle deals with the matter of the sins of the flesh or carnal

nature we still have and will have until we are released from this tent

of our body. All of us are prone to sinning. When we find ourselves

committing a sin, there is only one thing to do. It is to admit the sin

before God. We go to the Lord Jesus, confess it and immediately we

are cleansed by that blood. There is another verse that can be brought

to bear on that particular situation. It is “If a man knows what it is to

god and does not do it, then that is sin”. So we could have

unconscious sins. However, we have faith in Christ. His blood is all

the time cleansing us. He is just and He forgives us and forgets the

particular sin.  Only someone who does not know his own heart or

actions is so dense as to say he is perfect, has no fault etc. About that

person and sadly many on hearing Prince do say it and write it, this is

what the Bible says as in verse 10. First of all it is self-deception. He is

deceiving himself. Secondly, he has allowed himself to fall into a

position of not having “the Word” in him. The Word carries the truth

of the gospel. He has rejected that Word and that truth. John goes so

far as to say he is telling God, “You are a liar”. He does not have the

word abiding in Him. Jesus said “If you abide in Me and my words

abide in you ….”. That is the truth we must all follow.

We call on all who have listened to these heresies and who obey them

to repent and turn to what John says. I did not say it. I only point out

what the Spirit of God says through John’s writing of his epistles.

John speaks a lot about truth and the need to abide in it, Jesus said

the same things in the Gospels.

Another grave heresy I heard Joseph Prince say was that if we are

sick or are poor, we “fall    short of the glory of God”. Are these the

words of an “angel of light” that Paul warns us about in his writings to

the church in Corinth? Coming short of the glory of God has nothing

to do with sickness or poverty. Sickness is a result of the judgment of

God that is still on our bodies. They are subject to death. We are

waiting for the redemption of our bodies, Romans 8:21. We fall short

of the glory of God because of our condition of sin we were born with.

Our deeds prove that sinfulness that we have. We were born short of

the glory of God. It means we all do not meet the approval of God.

There is glory in that. Those under the Law by following its

injunctions, or trying to, had no hope of meeting with God’s approval.

It is only by faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross of

atonement, that we can have the approval of God.
