Disciples were not gathered into churches. Jesus’ disciples, particularly the twelve, were never in church groups. James pastored the church of the Hebrews or Israelites in Jerusalem.. Those there had left Judaism and believed in the Messiah, Jesus Christ, of the gospel. After A.D.70 there were none left in Palestine and there was no Jerusalem at all. Those believers were in Pella or in the mountains surrounding it. He had been martyred. Jesus had called disciples as He said, to follow Him. The twelve were His disciples, the eleven. Called apostles in Matt. 10:2. As disciples in Mt.101 they were given authority over foul spirits. In Mt.28:19 they were to make disciples of all the pagans, Gentiles, nations, the non-Israelites. This the eleven did as books about the were written, lost and many of the mss. discovered and we have access to them in English today. This command was for them. In Acts 6 number of the disciples was multiplied. It included many of the priests. Acts 11:19 – Those scattered when Stephen was martyred, went to Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, but to the Jews only who became disciples. When His eleven disciples/apostles went to those of Israel scattered around the Roman Empire, even as far as Russia, India, they also preached to many Gentiles. They were witnesses and did not basically establish the disciples they made into churches as did Paul later. In Acts 13:7 mention is made of Tertius, ‘reckoned among the “seventy disciples” of Christ . In Iconium, Acts 14:1, Paul and Barnabas were in Iconium, Jews and Greeks. In 13:37,38 Paul said ‘we turn to the Gentiles’, who heard, and many believed.
