SON OF MAN IN 1 ENOCH

The Son of Man first appears in the Book of 1 Enoch that was used as Scripture until about A.D.300 when it was discarded by the then Catholic Church with the influence of the Masorete Judaism. He is depicted in a most glorious manner. God calls Him ‘My Elect’, ‘My Righteous One’ and He was ‘hidden’. That was the case even in the Old Testament. He appears only once there in Daniel 7. He does appear on earth on various occasions but as the Angel of the Lord.in what is called by theologians an Epiphany. The first time the Angel of the Lord came to earth briefly was in the story of Hagar, someone who had been thrown out of the family of Abraham with Ishmael her son. They were not even then in the line of blessing through Abraham to the world as God had said to him, ‘In your Seed shall all the nations of the world be blessed’. This was part of the gospel preached to him and the blessing of Christ would come later through Isaac and never through Ishmael, son of Hagar. They are in the desert without water about to die. Then the Angel of the Lord for the first time in the history of the world comes to her from heaven, in a brief visit as a man who spoke to her and sustained her and Ishmael. That is a wonderful story of the grace of God. It prefigured when ‘the grace of God that brings Salvation has appeared to all men’, Salvation being Jesus who came to the world not as the Son of Man but as Immanuel, God with us and Jesus, the One who would save His people from their sins. The promise to Abraham of blessing to all nations was being fulfilled. the people of the Lord Jesus Christ were first the Jew and then the Gentile as the gospel was given in that order. But it included Jews and the far greater number of Gentiles who would receive the grace of God in the gospel. Jude quotes from 1 Enoch and so does Peter. Jesus Christ called Himself scores of times not Son of God but Son of Man. He also knew the contents of the Book of 1 Enoch that spoke of Him.
